Did you know

For as long as I can remember, I have seldom eaten breakfast in the morning. Usually it's just coffee and out. I know this is a terrible habit; my grandmother told me so, many years ago. But it is what it is.

Lately I have been buying Cheerios and trying to remember to eat them in the morning, but that doesn't always work. It's strange -- at every other time of the day, when I am hungry, I eat. But at some point in the last 20 years or so I came to regard hunger in the morning as a false alarm.

I forgot to eat my Cheerios this morning, and also yesterday morning.

Bubba

Next month I will travel to Little Rock for the annual convention of the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies. I'm psyched, not least because the keynote speaker is one Bill Clinton. I have heard him speak before -- I wrote about that here -- and can't wait to see him again.

I think I'm going through a bit of nostalgia for the Clinton era. Ah, for the time when bitter political strife meant an argument over should be ambassador to Luxembourg.

Junkers forever

Country fans, be sure to head to the Crystal Corner this Saturday, May 13, for a reunion performance by the Junkers. Yes, my old honkytonk band is getting together for more fun and romance. Joining us will be the amazing blues savants the Cash Box Kings.

Showtime is 9:30 pm. The Crystal is at 1302 Williamson St. on Madison's east side.

Sing, Dennis

I'm very excited about my newest possession, a gift from my dad: 13 CDs containing mp3s of 939 episodes of Jack Benny's radio program, which ran from 1932 to 1955. I don't know why I find Jack Benny so funny, but I do.
